Replace or Renew Your Driver License in South Carolina
In Person
Your South Carolina driver’s license expires on your birthday every 8 years (10 years for REAL ID). The SCDMV will send a renewal notice about 60 days before your license expires. You may renew in person at any SCDMV branch office. No appointment is needed for most services. Plan of Action:- Visit an SCDMV office: Find a location near you using this map.
- Bring required documentation:

- Your current driver’s license

- Proof of Social Security number

- Two proofs of SC residency
- Pass the vision test: You must meet minimum vision standards.
- Pay the fee: $25 for a standard license.
- Receive your new license: Your permanent license will arrive by mail within 10 business days. Find a DMV office near you

You may be eligible to renew online at SCDMV Online Services if you meet these requirements:- Your license is not expired for more than 9 months

By Mail
Mail-in renewals are available for certain eligible drivers, including military personnel stationed out of state. Contact the SCDMV for more information.
